My History with Autocar

My father worked at The Autocar Company in Ardmore PA. from 1918 to 1954. About 25 years of this time he served as an assistant service  manager at the factory in Ardmore.

In the latter  part of his career he was a Factory Service Manager.  My brother Robert worked in the engineering department at the factory.

I worked as a mechanic 1950-52 at the Philadelphia branch and Parts and Service manager 1953-54 at the Chester, PA branch. So you can see why I have a nostalgic connection to Autocar truck history.

My mother was a secretary to Mr. Page, president of the company in the early 1920's. My uncle, Fred Trunk, worked in the Ardmore Factory until it closed in 1954 and in The Exton plant until 1962. He was in the road test department.

Gordon Stevens President Friends of Autocar‏

Gordon went to work with The Autocar Truck Company in Ardmore PA. on May 1939 after graduating from Haverford High School in Delaware County PA. He started in the cab department working under Ross Hillman. Then he moved to Blueprint Boy and Letter Writer sending letters out for parts from 1941 to 1943 at which time he was drafted into the Army Signal Corps. He was sent to Hawaii for a year and then reassigned to the West Coast USA. to detect and intercept Japanese balloons believed to be armed.  In 1946 he returned to Autocar as a draftsman until 1950 and then into the military rebuilding department. In 1951 he became the assistant purchasing agent until 1954 when the Ardmore factory was closed and he moved out to the Exton Plant as purchasing agent. He worked in this position until 1980. He was moved from there to the Cleveland Defense Products Division. In 1981, left the Company and returned home to Malvern PA. to work for other employers until retirement. Gordon Stevens is a loyal Autocar devotee and one of the founders of "Friends of Autocar" and we are proud to have as our President!
